Checkered Throw Pillow Free Knitting Pattern

Hello! What better way to kick your home decor up a notch than with a pillow you make yourself?? As an added bonus, this project is the perfect stash buster. It takes less than one skein of yarn and knits up in a weekend.

Materials:

Yarn: K+C Alpaca yarn or any bulky size 6 yarn (I used the shade "taupe")

Yards: approximately 100 yds

Needles: 9mm straight needles (#13)

Additional materials: tapestry needles, scissors, 12"x12" pillow form

Gauge: 11 stitches and 14 rows in a 4" x 4" square

I would highly recommend knitting a guage. I know, it’s not the most fun but especially when designing a pattern to fit over a pillow form, it’s so important to know for sure the appropriate size of your stitches!

Half of the appeal of this pattern is the fact that it only uses 2 stitches!

Abbreviations:

kn = knit

pu = purl

Let’s get into the pattern!

Using the 9mm straight needles, cast on 33 stitches.

Row 1: knit 11, purl 11, knit 11

Row 2: purl 11, knit 11, purl 11

**repeat Row 1 and Row 2 until 14 rows are completed**

Row 15: purl 11, knit 11, purl 11

Row 16: knit 11, purl 11, knit 11

**repeat Row 15 and Row 16 until 14 rows are completed**

Row 29: knit all stitches

Row 30: purl all stitches

**repeat Row 29 and Row 30 until 14 rows are completed**

In total, 42 rows should have been completed. Cast off in pattern and tie off with a long tail. This will be used to stitch the pillow cover together at the end.

Repeat entire pattern a second time, to create the other side of the pillow.

Time to assemble your pillow!

Taking the two completed knit squares, turn them back-to-back with the "wrong side" facing out.

Using the tapestry needle and long cast-off tail, stitch together three out of the four sides. Make sure to make even, uniform stitches so the pillow turns out evenly.

After the three sides are joined, turn the cover inside out and place the pillow form inside. Using the same long tail and tapestry needle, stitch up the fourth side evenly. Tie off at the end of the row and weave in any ends.

Ta-da! Your pillow is complete! Show off your creation on social media and be sure to tag me @chainandstitch!
