10 Minute Scrunchie Pattern

For the past year, my favorite quick crochet project has been scrunchies! They’re simple and quick (I timed it once - 13 minutes with minimal distractions so we can round down to 10 minutes). This is definitely a beginner pattern too, which makes it even better! I firmly believe that the type of yarn used makes or breaks your perfect scrunchie. Many brands sell velvet yarn (I’ve tried all the I can) and my all-time favorite is Bernat velvet. You can find it at Joann’s and Michael’s!

Onto the pattern!

Supplies:

  • 5mm crochet hook

  • Bernat velvet yarn

  • Hair elastic (standard hair elastics work best, especially if they’re a little snug - the scrunchie will stretch them!)

  • Scissors

Stitches used:

  • Slip stitch (ss)

  • Single crochet (sc)

  • Double crochet (dc)

Steps:

  1. Form a slip stitch with your yarn and slip it onto your crochet hook. The scrunchie is going to be crochet around the hair elastic. Single crochet around the hair band, forming the first stitch of round 1.

  2. Continue making slip stitches around the hair band under the band is covered (about 70 single crochets). If you want more scrunch, continue adding as many single crochets as you like. I usually keep pushing the stitches together to add more.

  3. Slip stitch to the first single crochet.

  4. To begin the second round, chain 2.

  5. Alternate double crochets and single crochets for the entirety of the round, beginning with a double crochet.

  6. Slip stitch to the second chain of the “chain 2” when having completed the second round and finish off.

If you want a smaller scrunchie, feel free to stop after step 4! Small hair elastics can also be used for mini scrunchies; just alter the amount of stitches.

Happy crocheting! If you try this pattern and post a picture, tag me @chainandstitch!
