Wisconsin Winter Beanie Pattern
If you’re looking for a quick knit and need a beanie that can survive a frigid Wisconsin winter, look no further! I really like the look of a thick beanie with a foldover brim and big yarn pom pom. I’ve used two different types of yarn for this (and loved them both), Blue Sky Fibers Bulky and Buttercream Cozy yarn. Both are ideal, but in slightly different categories. Buttercream Cozy is available at Joann’s and I’d recommend buying Blue Sky Fibers from Wool & Company.
This pattern is knit on circular needles and requires only two stitches (knit and purl), as well as no decreases, which makes it perfect for beginner knitters!!
Supplies:
Approximately 90 yards of bulky yarn (size 6)
10 mm circular knitting needles
Scissors
Crochet hook or tapestry needle
One stitch marker
Steps:
Cast on 34 stitches.
Place stitch marker before the first stitch, marking the beginning of the row.
Alternate knit and purl throughout the round, beginning with a knit stitch. Knit the first stitch, purl the second, knit the third, purl the fourth, etc.
Continue on the knitting and purling alternation until the hat (or rather, tube of a hat) until the piece measures 12.5 inches. The hat can be made shorter or longer depending on preference. I wanted some slouch on mine, as well as a 3.5 inch brim.
Cast off in pattern, leave a long tail to cinch the top of the hat.
Using the tapestry needle or crochet hook, weave the tail through the last row. Pull tight to close the top of the hat.
If you don’t want a pom pom on top, finish off the hat here. I typically tie the hat off and turn it inside out for a cleaner look on top.
Pom pom instructions:
Using the same yarn and your hand, wrap the yarn repeatedly around your four fingers (a 3 inch wide piece of cardboard may also be used).
Wrap the yarn around your hand about 50 times (more for a chunkier pom, less for a thinner one).
After removing the wound up yarn from your hand (or cardboard), tie around the middle with a 4 inch piece of yarn.
Cut all the loops of the pom.
Weave an 8 inch piece of yarn through the pom and tie to the top of the hat, cutting the ends once secured.
